The morning she found out

Lily came downstairs at 6am with this look on her face — she'd found the letter from her school's gifted program. She didn't say anything, just handed it to me and watched my face. We sat on the kitchen floor and cried a little.

Story Nov 2024

Dad's 70th, the drive home

We talked the whole way back from the restaurant. He told me about moving here in 1987 with nothing but a duffel bag and the name of one person to call. I'd never heard that story. I kept glancing over at him in the passenger seat.

Story Sep 2024

The night the power went out

Three hours with no screens. We ended up playing cards by candlelight. Lily made up her own rules and somehow still won. Chris made popcorn on the stove. One of the better nights this year.

Story Aug 2024

Pacific Northwest, last day

We didn't want to leave. Sat at a coffee shop in Portland for two hours longer than we needed to, not talking much. That's how you know a trip was good — when leaving it feels like a small loss.

Story May 2024

Mom's bread recipe, finally written down

She's never had it written anywhere. I sat at the kitchen table and took notes while she made it from memory. "A handful of this, enough of that." We had to make it twice to get the amounts right.

Favorite Jan 2025

Sunday morning ritual

Coffee on the back porch before anyone else wakes up. The hour when the day is still mine. Has been this way for five years — it's the thing I'd miss most if it changed.

Favorite Oct 2024

Julia Child on starting late

"I was 32 when I started cooking; up until then, I just ate." Found this during a rough week and kept coming back to it. There's permission in it.

Favorite Aug 2024

The Bend campsite, site 14

Backed up to the river, shade in the afternoon, no neighbors close. If we go back to Oregon we're going back here. The sound of the water made sleeping easy.

Favorite Jun 2024

Lily's laugh when something is actually funny

Not the polite laugh. The real one — big, sudden, slightly snorty. She gets it from Chris. It is the best sound in our house.

Favorite Mar 2024

The sesame noodles recipe from the block party

Jenna made them. Cold, tahini-based, lots of scallion, a little heat. Asked for the recipe three times before she finally wrote it down on a napkin. Worth it.

Milestones 9 captures
Milestone Feb 2024

Promoted to Director

Three years of working toward this. Found out on a Tuesday afternoon, in a call I thought was a check-in. Told Chris in the parking lot, sitting in the car, both of us laughing.

Milestone Mar 2024

Paid off the car

Six months early. A small thing but it felt significant — the first big debt we've cleared since the house. Made a nice dinner to mark it.

Milestone Nov 2023

Ran my first 10K

Finished in 59:42. Not fast, but I finished. Lily made a sign. "Go Mom" in purple marker with a drawing of me that looked nothing like me. Still have it.

Want Apr 2025

A trip to Portugal — just Chris and me

We've talked about it for four years. Lisbon, the Alentejo, a few days with no agenda. Before Lily is old enough to have opinions about where we go on vacation.

Want Jan 2025

Learn to make fresh pasta from scratch

Not from a kit. Actual flour-and-eggs pasta. I want to know how to do it the way Nonna did it without a recipe, by feel.

Want Sep 2024

A proper home office — with a door

The corner of the bedroom isn't cutting it. A space that's just mine, with a door that closes. Soundproofing optional but appreciated.

Proud of May 2025

Kept the habit for 90 days

Morning walks. No headphones, no phone. Started in February mostly out of desperation, kept going because it worked. 90 days without breaking the streak.

Proud of Dec 2024

Called Mom every Sunday this year

Every single one. Missed a few Saturdays here and there but not one Sunday. She started expecting it, and I liked that she did.

Proud of Oct 2024

Didn't quit when the project nearly fell apart

October was brutal. Lost a key person on the team, missed a deadline, had to re-pitch to leadership. We got through it. The project shipped in December. I'm proud of how the team held together.

Proud of Jun 2024

Said the hard thing, and it went well

Told a colleague what wasn't working. Had rehearsed it for a week. She listened, thanked me, and changed something. I spent too long not doing this.
